The cottages depicted in this sketch were used by students visiting the Museum for extended periods of study.

Cook and Wedderburn note that 'pilgrims' from distant cities 'lodged in neighbouring cottages, and visited the Museum day after day for as long as six weeks for as long as six weeks together' (Works, 30, p. xliii)
