Additional Floor Postdating Museum

The two original upstairs rooms are now situated on the first floor of a two-storey building. Despite the addition of an extra floor, the old cottage interior remains self-contained.

The dimensions of upstairs rooms are unaltered, though there is now a bathroom at the back of the house. This sits above the downstairs extension built later as part of Ruskin House.

Upstairs Room: West

This room measures 360 cm (frontal width) x 393 cm (depth). The chimney breast is positioned on the south wall. It measures 141 cm across, with alcoves on either side measuring approximately 108 cm and 111 cm. These alcoves are 13 cm deep. There are two windows: one is in the north side wall, at the front of the house (visible in the 'Exterior' photograph); the other is set in the adjacent wall and offers westward views up the Rivelin Valley (for photograph, see link at bottom of page).

The room is notable for retaining its Victorian mantelpiece, which resembles in style and material the mantelpiece visible in the 'Interior' photograph. A decorative iron vent is retained in the chimney breast.

Upstairs Room: East

This room is situated above the kitchen. It measures 360 cm (frontal width) x 390 cm (depth). The chimney breast is positioned on the east side wall. It is 135 cm wide, with alcoves on either side measuring approximately 131 cm and 130 cm. These alcoves are 16 cm and 18 cm deep. There is one window; it is situated in the north wall (visible in the 'Exterior' photograph of front of the house).

A large cupboard area is situated in the west side wall, measuring 90 cm deep and 85 cm wide. This space extends above the hallway and stairs. The mantelpiece in this room has been removed, though the chimney breast retains an iron vent.
