Bole Hill Road and Local Buildings

Walkley Hall, Heavygate Road, 1900 [Image y01662 from the collections in Sheffield Local Studies Library, used with kind permission]
Bole Hill Road ran behind the Museum. Although not exactly contemporary, these photographs of local buildings provide an indication the area's atmosphere.

Walkley Hall

A notable local building was Walkley Hall. The Sheffield Local Studies Library indicates that the Hall was 'probably built by William Rawson in 1600', and that it 'was demolished in 1926 to make way for the present housing estate'.

The new housing estate stands on Heavygate Road, a street that leads steeply uphill from Bole Hill Road. The Sheffield Local Studies Library indicates that 'Heavygate Road was once a narrow lane and was known locally as Dark Lane'.

Bole Hill Primary School

Bole Hill Road was a rural lane in the 1880s.

The photograph on the right shows the imposing structure of Bole Hill Primary School. It is still standing, though now in different use. It was built by the Sheffield School Board in 1896 and is Grade II listed.

Although postdating the removal of the Museum from Walkley by six years, it serves as an indication of the rapid development occurring in the area. It would eventually stand sixty metres along the road from Ruskin House, on the opposite side of the street. The photograph is not dated, but is likely to be Edwardian.
